AES Clean Energy is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to oversee the initial energization and testing of photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the United States.
The Commissioning Engineer will collaborate closely with AES engineering, QA/QC, project management, construction management, and other members of the project execution team. This position also requires coordination with EPC partners, external vendors and contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) throughout the start-up process. The Commissioning Engineer will have comprehensive knowledge of power systems, start-up operations, safety procedures, commissioning methodologies, vendor management, and construction coordination. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously are essential. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities are critical for team success. Efficient time and resource management to meet project schedules is expected. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong work ethic, effective communication and organizational capabilities, a solution-oriented approach, and the ability to thrive both independently and within a team environment.
This is a full-time, field-based position with significant travel requirements and is considered hybrid. The chosen candidate will spend most of their time on project sites, with scheduled rotations home. During off-site rotations, attendance at meetings, timely responses to emails and phone calls, and provision of project status updates are expected, unless paid time off (PTO) has been approved. Intervals and durations are flexible, provided the needs of the project/s are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary representative for the commissioning team on site.
- Evaluate and facilitate the implementation of commissioning plans from all project stakeholders.
- Coordinate with vendors, EPCs, and the AES project team to manage commissioning-related activities.
- Lead daily and weekly coordination meetings.
- Maintain current project status trackers and provide weekly updates.
- Manage schedules for all commissioning activities.
- Process warranty claims as necessary.
- Manage all commissioning documentation.
- Interpret project drawings and equipment manuals.
- Review safety plans and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Coordinate LOTO activities to facilitate safe execution of commissioning tasks.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Flexibility to adjust daily activities based on project needs
- In-depth knowledge of construction site safety and protocols
- Effective communication skills and ability to excel in a fast-paced team environment
- Minimum 5 years of experience in solar PV installation and/or maintenance
- At least 2 years of experience with battery energy storage systems
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
- Experience managing contractors
- Understanding of construction and engineering principles
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Detail-oriented with proven capability to manage multiple projects
- OSHA 10 and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety certifications
- Knowledge of general lock out tag out (LOTO) procedures and best practices.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience with IT communications protocols and tools
- OSHA 30 certification
- NABCEP certification (PVIP, PVIS, PVSI, ESIP, PVCMS)
