Summary of Role
NovaSource is seeking a Technical Training Manager with a specialized background in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and renewable Utility Power Plants. This position is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive technical training and qualification program, with an emphasis on BESS-specific electrical safety, operational readiness, and compliance topics. This role requires demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and documenting full training curricula from the ground up, including field and classroom-based instruction, certification paths, and continuing education. Live/virtual classroom, video, online instruction, virtual reality, and on-the-job field-based methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, document, and maintain structured training curricula focused on BESS and high-voltage electrical systems in utility-scale power plants.
- Develop and manage formal job qualification standards (JQS), technician certification levels, and progression tracks for BESS technicians.
- Lead content creation including course outlines, instructor guides, technical manuals, digital modules, and assessment tools.
- Deliver training across various formats including in-person, virtual, video, and VR, focused on electrical safety, commissioning, O&M protocols, and troubleshooting.
- Partner with field operations, OEM vendors, and compliance/safety teams to ensure training aligns with current field conditions and safety standards.
- Implement KPIs, skills matrices, and evaluation tools to track technician progress and training effectiveness.
- Stay current with NEC, OSHA, NFPA 70E, NETA, and industry-specific BESS protocols and integrate updates into curriculum content.
- Assist in vendor coordination for external certifications and credentialing programs.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of experience in technical training program development, preferably in the renewable energy or electrical power sector.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in BESS operations or commissioning (e.g., Fluence, Tesla, Sungrow, Powin, or similar OEMs).
- Proven experience developing training documentation and structured learning paths, including assessments, progression milestones, and technical standards for field personnel.
- Professional certifications in training and/or instructional design, such as:
- CompTIA CTT+ (Preferred)
- ATD Master Trainer or Instructional Designer (Preferred)
- OSHA Authorized Trainer (General Industry or Construction)
- NFPA 70E Awareness or Qualified Worker
- Ability to translate complex technical material into understandable, field-relevant content for diverse technician audiences.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite and digital learning tools (e.g., Articulate, Camtasia, LMS platforms).
- Excellent verbal, written, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Comfortable working in the field and around high voltage/BESS equipment as needed for curriculum development or training delivery.
- Willingness to travel up to 25%.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instructional Design, Renewable Energy, or related field.
- Experience with commissioning, maintenance, or SCADA integration of utility-scale PV and BESS systems.
- Prior experience as a field trainer, commissioning lead, or O&M supervisor with a focus on workforce development.
Fit for Duty
- Ability to sit/stand for long periods working on a computer in an office and/or office environment.
- Ability to travel as needed and work in an outdoor environment in conjunction with solar PV. project field visits in the development and delivery of training content.
- Ability to inspect and observe work maintenance activities in outdoor construction type
areas without handicap access. - Ability to walk, kneel, crawl, climb ladders and stairs.
