THE SAFETY COORDINATOR POSITION
Sunnova Energy is searching for a Safety Coordinator to participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the company’s safety management systems in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and regulations to include 29 CFR Part 1910 (General Industry) and 29 CFR Part 1926 (Construction). This role is responsible for assessing hazards and controls, determining worksite risks, investigating incidents along with conducting root cause analysis. Must be able to manage employee injury and illness reporting, OSHA 300 Record Keeping logs and prepare emergency disaster response events.
This position will be relied upon to conduct new hire training, return to work training and refresher training. Must be able to conduct company internal safety audits, assist in field personal protective equipment resupply, develop safety programs, processes and policies. This person must be able to meet business objectives, identify operational successes, challenges, and articulate them back to management and the safety team. Additionally, this person will provide statuses on the health of the safety program and field performance, identify appropriate safe work practices, safety behaviors, and safety compliances according to regulations and company policies.
Candidates must live in California or western Nevada to be considered as frequent travel to these areas is required.
SAFETY COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES
•Assist in creating a zero injury/incident safety culture.
•Perform root cause analysis for injuries and illness, near misses and incident investigations as required.
•Conduct on-site safety audits and hazard assessments, identify safety hazards and safety violations, provide summary reports of audit deficiencies and track audit corrective actions to closure.
•Provide weekly, monthly, quarterly and/or annual summary of safety status reports to management.
•Provide safety best practices and recommendations for continuous improvement.
•Provide technical and regulatory expertise as needed.
•As necessary utilize ‘Stop Work Authority’ to address safe work practices and employee safety behaviors.
•Present safety messages/toolbox talks in meetings as required, lead safety trainings and new hire orientations.
•Facilitate safety committee meetings.
•Perform employee personal protective equipment resupply assessments.
•Deliver on business goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for improving safe work practices, performance, and programs.
•Develop, review implement and maintain safety policies, programs, processes and training.
•Manage and maintain learning management system software tools, employee safety training records and training completion reporting.
•Distribute daily, weekly, monthly and annual safety awareness messaging and training.
•Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements to maintain a successful safety record.
•Manage OSHA 300 log Record Keeping and Reporting.
•Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
•Health and Safety Certification from an accredited training program or health and safety program equivalent.
•3-5 years as a Health and Safety Specialist, Technician or Coordinator.
•2-4 years’ experience in renewable/solar energy, utilities, construction, oil/gas or manufacturing.
•Comprehensive understanding in the application and implementation of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926 regulations, procedures.
•Extensive experience and knowledge in conducting safety audits, including a deep understanding of safety regulations, risk assessment methodologies, hazard identification techniques, and the ability to thoroughly evaluate safe work practices and procedures to identify potential safety concerns and recommend corrective actions.
•Bilingual - English/ Spanish.
•Ability to analyze and interpret data and solve practical problems.
•Ability to work well as a team-member.
•Legally authorized to work in the US for ANY employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or Risk Management.
•Technical school graduate or certification from a safety education & training program.
•ISO 45001 Lead/Internal Auditor Certification, OSHA 30 Certification, OSHA 510, CSP, OHST and/or CHST Certifications
•Proficient using Microsoft 365 Office: Copilot, Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint etc.
•Strong data entry skills in entering information in tracking systems/databases.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Working knowledge of general and construction safety, fall protection, working at heights, ladder safety, slip, trips and falls programs, electrical safety, defensive driving, etc.
•Written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to include effective proof-reading and proper grammatical presentations.
•Keen analytical skills reflecting the ability to be proactive with ability to pay keen attention to the smallest of details.
•Must be able to manage time effectively and adhere to strict deadlines.
WORKING CONDITIONS
•100% Remote with frequent field travel.
•Provide in-person training and support at monthly safety new hire orientations.
•Must be able to sit, stand or walk for frequent and extended periods.
•Able to work extended hours when required.
•Valid Driver’s License: Motor Vehicle Report required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
•Extended period of time working at a computer workstation.
•At least 50% travel to Domestic/US Territory locations with overnight/out-of-town stay.
•Acclimate to extreme cold/heat weather conditions while working in the field.
•Able to use computers and monitors for extended periods daily.
•Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, regularly.
•Noise Level is typically moderate.
•While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear; or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
•While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, stand for long periods of time, walk on uneven terrain (stone, rock, gravel, and concrete surfaces), sit, climb multiple platforms both stairs and vertical ladders, work from elevated structures, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
•The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, handle, or feel and manipulate items with hands, feet, arms.
