Basic Job Functions
The Head of Materials Management and Logistics is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the global operations related to warehousing, inventory management, distribution, and logistics. This role involves managing the entire supply chain process, from inventory control to the final delivery of goods, ensuring that operations run smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
Required Skills/Competencies
Leadership & Strategy:
Lead the end-to-end operations of warehousing, inventory management, distribution, and logistics across multiple sites.
Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for warehousing, inventory planning, and distribution, aligned with the company’s growth goals and customer demand.
Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of the hub-and-spoke distribution model, ensuring the flow of goods from central hubs to regional spokes and end destination is efficient, timely, and cost-effective.
Collaborate with senior leadership to align operational strategies with overall business objectives, scaling logistics operations to meet future demand.
Inventory Management & Planning:
Inventory Management: Oversee all aspects of inventory management, ensuring accurate stock levels, optimized inventory turnover, and minimal stockouts and excess inventory.
Inventory Planning: Lead the development and execution of inventory planning strategies, including demand forecasting, stock replenishment, and safety stock management, to ensure availability without overstocking.
Develop and implement inventory control systems, policies, and best practices to ensure inventory accuracy across multiple warehouses and distribution hubs.
Collaborate with the procurement, sales and operations teams to forecast inventory needs, align inventory levels with demand, and ensure timely replenishment.
Use data-driven analysis to monitor inventory performance, identify slow-moving items, and reduce stock obsolescence and shrinkage.
Oversee the continuous improvement of inventory systems, implementing technologies such as Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Automated Inventory Tracking tools to enhance visibility and control.
Hub-and-Spoke Distribution:
Design, optimize, and oversee the hub-and-spoke distribution network, ensuring goods are efficiently routed from central hubs to regional distribution points.
Analyze and optimize the placement of distribution hubs to ensure timely deliveries, minimize transportation costs, and meet customer service levels.
Manage transportation logistics, including carrier selection, route optimization, and scheduling, to reduce lead times and shipping costs while ensuring high service levels.
Continuously assess and improve the efficiency of cross-docking operations, inventory distribution, and last-mile delivery processes to ensure cost-effective fulfillment.
Operations Management:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of all warehousing, logistics, and distribution activities to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and alignment with customer expectations.
Implement lean principles and process improvements to optimize warehouse layouts, inventory handling, and order fulfillment practices, improving speed and reducing waste.
Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) related to warehousing, inventory, and distribution efficiency (e.g., order accuracy, on-time delivery, inventory turnover).
Develop and execute plans to address operational challenges, including capacity constraints, labor shortages, and changing customer demand patterns.
Team Leadership & Development:
Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team across warehousing, distribution, inventory planning, and logistics functions.
Foster a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement within the team.
Provide professional development opportunities and training to ensure team members are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.
Manage team performance, set goals, and ensure alignment with company objectives.
Cost Control:
Develop and manage the budget for warehousing, distribution, and inventory management operations.
Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives across the supply chain, including reducing warehouse operational costs, transportation expenses, and inventory carrying costs.
Negotiate with third-party logistics providers (3PLs), carriers, and other vendors to ensure cost-effective solutions while maintaining high service standards.
QHSE:
Ensure all logistics and warehousing operations comply with relevant regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and safety standards.
Establish and enforce safety protocols to maintain a safe and healthy work environment across all warehouses and distribution centers.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to quality standards, safety regulations, and inventory management protocols.
Technology & Innovation:
Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technological advancements in supply chain, logistics, and inventory management.
Lead the implementation of adequate technologies to optimize inventory control, warehouse operations, and logistics processes.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (MBA or advanced degree preferred).
10+ years of experience in warehousing, distribution, logistics, and inventory management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Proven experience managing a hub-and-spoke distribution model, as well as large-scale inventory management and planning operations.
Strong background in optimizing supply chain networks, including experience with demand forecasting, inventory replenishment strategies, and logistics optimization.
Expertise in inventory planning and management, including forecasting, stock replenishment, and safety stock strategies.
In-depth knowledge of hub-and-spoke distribution models, routing, and multi-site logistics optimization.
Strong experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to use data to drive decisions around inventory optimization, demand forecasting, and supply chain efficiencies.
Proven leadership skills with a track record of building and managing high-performing teams.
Strong financial acumen, with experience in managing budgets and cost optimization across warehousing and logistics operations.
